KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has given his full backing to a suggestion to transform Brickfields into a Little India.

"Brickfields should be a unique place because it is a microcosm of the Indian community in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

"For that reason, I would like to give my full support to what Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique suggested, that we should develop a Little India here," he said after visiting the Deepavali Bazaar here.

He said, however, that he would leave it to the experts to create it so that it could be a showcase, mainly for visitors from abroad.

Najib added that the creation of a Little India would also serve in efforts to develop a more united Malaysia.

"When I walk down Brickfields, I want to feel like I am walking in Kampung Baru or Petaling Street. I want to feel at home. And today, I had the sense that I am truly welcome here."

He added that the problems of the Indian community would continue to be on the government's agenda.

"This is the commitment of the Barisan Nasional government.

"Unity is the bedrock of our strength and we appreciate the role of the Indian community and MIC in developing this nation. Together we can bring Malaysia to greater heights," he said.

What do all of you think? Should Brickfields be turned into Little India?

A resounding NO. It will only benefit the Traders who are already raking in millions thanks to KL Sentral, which is like a God Given gift to them.

To commercialise more by calling it Little India will only inconvenience thousands of families who call this as their home as this will encourage more traders to come to Brickfields, turn Pedestrian walks into stalls (already, there are many such stalls) and roads may be closed for traffic, etc.,
